Otoplasty (Ear Aesthetics)
Life Time Aesthetic Surgery
Ear aesthetics is a surgical procedure that corrects the shape, size or position of the ear structure. It is preferred for both aesthetic concerns and functional problems.
The prominent ear problem is due to the insufficient level of the Y-shaped cartilage fold. This Y-shaped cartilage is located in the prominence area of the ear. If the cartilage tissue does not develop sufficiently, the angle between it and the skull widens. Therefore, the ear protrusion leans towards the front. As a result of all this, the ears take on an open appearance with a wider angle. The angle between the ear and the head should be 30 degrees under normal conditions. When considered over these values, larger angles emerge. This shows that you are faced with a prominent ear problem.
How Does Prominent Ear Deformity Occur?
Prominent ear deformity can be defined as a large angle between the back of the ear and the head. This condition usually develops due to genetic factors. However, traumas during and after birth may also be behind this.

What is Prominent Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)?
Otoplasty is an ear shaping operation to remove the prominent ear appearance. The aim here is to correct the appearance of large ears and inadequate folds in the auricle. The first reason for the deformity of the ear is that the gap angle between the ear and the head is too large. This results in a wider appearance in the ear. In order to minimize the excess angle in the treatment of these problems, effective stitches are applied to the junction point and the ear protrusion is brought closer to the head. Thus, the angle difference is reduced.
The second cause of deformity is that the folds that should be on the ear are not formed. In this problem, it is seen that the ear is flat. Strong stitches are placed in the area that should be curved in the ear protrusion and the cartilage structure is bent. As a result of this process, the flat appearance is eliminated.
How is Otoplasty Surgery Performed?
When Is Prominent Ear Surgery Performed?

What is the Process After Otoplasty Surgery?
The patient is seen 1 day after the operation. The dressing is changed or removed. There is usually no pain after the operation. Even if it is felt, it can be controlled with painkillers. So these are mild pains. The headband is applied both day and night for about 1 week. In the following days, it is requested to be worn only at night. Younger children can start school after 1 week. Adults can return to work much earlier. For 2 weeks, physical activities are restricted. Contact sports are not recommended for a minimum of 2 months. Follow-ups are planned more frequently in the first weeks. These follow-ups are then done at 3 and 12 months.

Who Can Have Otoplasty?
Otoplasty surgery is a surgical procedure that can be applied for individuals who are not satisfied with their ear appearance. The suitability of this operation, which can be performed on any age group from childhood to adulthood, is determined by taking into account factors such as the age of the person, the developmental status of the ear structure, health status and expectations. Otoplasty may be preferred for
- Children who usually complete ear development between the ages of 4 and 6
- Adolescents in puberty
- Individuals who experience aesthetic concerns in adulthood
What are the Risks of Otoplasty?
Otoplasty, like other surgical procedures, may involve some risks and side effects. However, these risks are usually minimal. Following the doctor’s instructions before prominent ear surgery and meticulous post-operative care ensures that possible complications are largely avoided. The risks and complications that may be encountered during otoplasty can be listed as follows:
- Infection may develop at the operation site, but this is usually controlled with antibiotic treatment.
- Blood accumulation (hematoma) may occur under the ear or in the surrounding tissues.
- There may be a difference in symmetry between the two ears during the healing process or during surgery.
- A distinct scar may remain in the area where the incision was made. However, these scars are usually invisible because they are usually behind the ear.
- Weakening of the cartilage tissue or thinning of the skin at the surgical site may occur.
- Opening of the sutures may cause unwanted distortion of the shape of the ear.
- In very rare cases, permanent numbness may occur due to nerve damage.
Otoplasty surgery is a procedure performed by an experienced surgeon and is usually completed within 1-2 hours. Our center is one of the leading institutions in this field. Mild pain and swelling may occur after surgery, but serious complications are extremely rare.

The healing process is usually fast and the patient can return to his/her daily life in a short time. Postoperative pain and swelling usually subsides within 2-3 days. Painkillers recommended by the specialist doctor help to make this process more comfortable. Otoplasty is a permanent procedure to prevent the ears from returning to their old state. In other words, there is no such thing as returning to its old state. It is recommended to wear a bandana for about 2 weeks after surgery to support the healing process and protect the ears. This period may vary according to the doctor’s instructions. The stitches used during the surgery dissolve and disappear within 5-7 days depending on the age of the person.

Our medical consultants in 8 countries are at your service 24/7 to provide you with support at all times.
Does ear aesthetic surgery only correct the prominent ear problem?
Ear aesthetics is not only for prominent ear problems. It can also be applied to reduce the size of the ear, correct asymmetrical ears and eliminate post-traumatic deformations. The operation is customized according to the patient’s needs.
Does the new position of the ear remain stable after ear aesthetic surgery?
Yes, it is extremely effective in this regard. After surgery, the ear is supported by reshaping the cartilage tissue and special suturing techniques. However, if the use of bandages and the doctor’s recommendations are not followed during the healing process, an unwanted change in position may occur.
What should be considered while sleeping after ear aesthetic surgery?
It is important to sleep on your back for the first few weeks. You can use a high pillow to avoid pressure on the ears. Since the side sleeping position may affect the shape of the ear, it is not recommended until the doctor approves it.
When can I start doing sports after ear aesthetic surgery?
Light walks and low-paced activities can be done 1-2 weeks after the surgery. However, sports such as football and basketball, which have the risk of hitting the ears, should not be done for at least 6-8 weeks. The doctor’s approval is required for sports that may affect the ear.
How are the natural curves of the ear preserved during ear aesthetics?
During the surgery, the doctor analyzes the natural folds in the ear in detail and plans the surgical techniques accordingly. The cartilage is reshaped for both the natural appearance and the new position. This prevents the ears from having an artificial appearance.
What is done in cases where cartilage tissue is not sufficient for ear aesthetics?
In some cases, when cartilage tissue is insufficient, tissue can be taken from other areas. Rib cartilage is an example of this. However, this is rare and usually the cartilage structure is sufficient to meet current needs. Alternatively, biocompatible implants can be used.
